I keep coming back to a plain fact: most researchers do not need one perfect database. They need a short list of databases that fit the kind of source they are after. For that reason, my top 10 is not a ranking of worth. It is a practical map of where many researchers start and what each source is best at.
The first three are the broadest. Scopus and Web of Science are the two big citation databases. They do not just help find articles. They also show who cited whom, which matters when a reader needs to trace a line of research. Google Scholar is different. It is wide, fast, and easy to use, but its coverage and sorting are less transparent than the commercial databases, so I treat it as a search layer, not a final record.
For many fields, PubMed belongs on the list no matter what else is used. It is the main free index for biomedical and life science literature. ERIC fills a similar role for education. Both are narrow in focus, which is exactly why they matter. A focused database often beats a broad one when the topic is clear.
JSTOR stays useful for humanities and social science work. It is strong for older journal runs and for stable text in fields where older articles still matter. Academic Search Complete is broader and less selective. That can be a weakness, but it is also a strength for early topic work, since it catches many kinds of material in one place.
ProQuest is hard to reduce to one line because it is a platform family, not one fixed database. Even so, it belongs on any researcher list because it often holds dissertations, newspapers, and journals that are hard to find elsewhere. That mix makes it useful when a project needs depth, not just article counts.
ScienceDirect and SpringerLink are both major publisher platforms. They matter because they give direct access to a large body of journal and book content in science, technology, and medicine. IEEE Xplore matters for engineering and computing. It is narrower than the others, but that is the point. Its strength is not breadth. It is precision.
That leaves the harder question: what counts as a top database when access is uneven? I think that is where honest limits matter most. A database can be excellent and still be less useful if a reader cannot reach it, if its coverage has changed, or if the publisher’s description is vague. Some sources also blur the line between index and full text, which can confuse new users. I do not treat those as small details. They shape the search itself.
The best short answer is this: researchers usually need a mix of broad discovery tools, field tools, and full-text platforms. No single database covers all three jobs well. A good search often starts broad, then narrows to the source that fits the field and the document type.
That is the kind of plain guidance I want Beyond Citation to keep making clear. The project is most useful when it names the source, states what it really does, and leaves room for what is still unclear. That is also the promise of The Source List: one digital source worth knowing, one search tip, and one honest limitation.
